What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a type of treatment that provides many of the same services as an inpatient program but allows clients to live at home and continue working or going to school. IOPs are ideal for those who need more support than what is available through traditional outpatient therapy but do not need the 24/7 care of an inpatient program.

At NuLife Behavioral Health, our Massachusetts IOP offers individualized treatment for substance use disorders and mental health concerns. We understand that no two clients are the same, which is why we create a personalized treatment plan for each person who comes to us for help.

Our IOP consists of small interactive groups along with individual sessions with your primary therapist. Typically, clients visit our centers for 12 hours each week. Clients attend three group therapy sessions a week as well as individual counseling sessions with a licensed professional. We also encourage those in recovery from substance use disorders to attend 12-step support programs, which can be a way to continue building a support system after treatment.

Benefits of Our IOP

For those working to overcome a substance use disorder or mental health concern, our IOP can provide many benefits, including:
  • Continued support from a team of clinicians – Working with treatment professionals even after completing inpatient treatment can help you maintain recovery.
  • A structured environment – Our IOP provides structure and support so you can focus on your recovery.
  • An opportunity to practice new skills – In group therapy, you’ll have the chance to practice the skills you’ve learned in treatment and develop new ones.
  • Flexibility – IOP allows you to live at home and continue working or going to school while receiving treatment.
In addition to group and individual therapy, clients in our IOP can participate in biofeedback and biosound therapies. These evidence-based therapies can help you learn to control your stress response and manage anxiety, essential skills for long-term recovery.
