What Is Trauma?

What one person may perceive as traumatic, someone else won’t. This makes trauma complex and requires individualized treatment and care. Trauma is a physical, mental, and emotional response to a life-threatening event. When threatened, the brain turns on the fight, flight, or freeze response. This is an ancient survival response that has helped humans survive for millennia. During the fight, flight, or freeze response, the body releases certain chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline to help people survive. If these chemicals are processed during the event, it becomes a memory. If they don’t, it becomes a trauma.

Trauma,  in some part, depends on upbringing, experience, belief systems, and someone’s ability to self-regulate their nervous system. Studies show that unresolved trauma traps cortisol, adrenaline, and other chemicals in the body’s tissues. When this happens, non-life-threatening events like loud noises and bright lights can trigger traumatic memory, flashback, and other physical responses as the body tries to process the unresolved event.

Trauma is connected to a person’s memory and the body’s experience of an event. For those who suffered childhood trauma, there may be little or no memory of an event. Their body, however, may struggle with strange symptoms like aggression, low-stress tolerance, emotional outbursts, and feeling unsafe in safe situations. These can all be signs of unresolved trauma.

Treating Trauma and Addiction Through Dual Diagnosis

Trauma and other co-occurring disorders often lead someone to self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. People who also have co-occurring disorders like anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, can more easily develop an addiction. At NuLife Behavioral Health, we use dual diagnosis to diagnose, treat, and manage addiction and co-occurring disorders.

Behavioral therapy is a leading therapy for addiction and mental health. Trauma therapy may use several approaches, including behavioral and alternative therapies to develop new strategies for stress reduction and self-soothing. Through talk therapy, physical exercise, and expressive therapies, clients at NuLife Behavioral Health develop the tools they need to identify triggers, process trauma, and take better care of their mental health.
